Individual Award
Betsy Houghton Award
Exemplary Individual Achievement in the Student Assistance Field

Elizabeth “Betsy” Houghton (1938-1991), a founding member of the Board of Directors of the National Student Assistance Association, was a pioneer in advocating for the involvement of parents and community leaders in alcohol and other drug prevention and intervention. This award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions in the Student Assistance field and demonstrated performance that is consistent with NSAA’s Ethical Guidelines and Standards of Practice.

Student Assistance Program of Excellence Award
Exemplary Program Achievement in the Student Assistance Field

This annual award is presented to a Student Assistance Program that has demonstrated effectiveness in identifying, referring and supporting students. Particular attention is given to programs which contain NSAA’s Student Assistance Program Components: School Board Policy, Staff Development, Program Awareness, Internal Referral Process, Problem Solving Team and Case Management, Student Assistance Program Evaluation, Educational Student Support Groups, Cooperation and Collaboration with Community Agencies and Integration with Other School-Based Programs.

Exemplary Research in the Student Assistance Field

To ensure the quality improvement of Student Assistance Programs and outcomes, systematic research and evaluation must be conducted. Data collection and analysis provide the basis for ongoing review of program goals and objectives and the results give credibility to the Student Assistance Program field. This award will be presented annually to research study in the Student Assistance Program field, which may serve as a model for other programs, and studies.
